Description: The acquisition of banks by credit unions and credit union mergers continues to be viewed as a strategic option. This course will review the fundamentals of how to acquire a bank, credit union, or branch of a bank or credit union. We will also cover the transactional and regulatory aspects of such a transaction, as well as the process and basic elements of completing a successful transaction.

Richard S. Garabedian is a member of the Financial Institutions Corporate & Regulatory ("FICR") practice group at Hunton Andres Kurth in Washington, DC, with extensive experience in representing banks and credit unions in merger and acquisition transactions. The FICR group represents banks, credit unions, and non-insured financial services firms nationwide and is recognized as a leader in the merger and acquisition of banks and credit unions. Over the last 15 years, the FICR group has served as counsel in nearly 350 M&A transactions, including cross-industry transactions, and has been ranked first in the number of transactions in three of the last six years.
Richard has more than 30 years’ experience representing banks, savings institutions, and credit unions on a nationwide basis. He has served as counsel on more than 40 mergers. Richard also focuses on bank and credit union charter changes, new products and services, fintech, regulatory compliance, de novo bank and credit union formations, cross-industry mergers, government assisted acquisitions of failing financial institutions, enforcement matters, and corporate governance. He has served as counsel at the federal reserve board. He also served as an adjunct professor of Banking Law at Rutgers University School of Law.
